ADL’s Words to Action™

As the world’s first Jewish Fraternity, Zeta Beta Tau remains in the unique position to serve as a convener on college campuses to address one of the deepest issues facing our brothers and their peers today: anti-Semitism. The college campus is a unique atmosphere for students. It is where they begin their academic and adult journeys by being exposed to new ideas and issues. Students are impressionable at this stage in their lives and we believe exposing them to the realities of anti-Semitism will help them become active bystanders and influencers in the campus community in the fight to eradicate anti-Semitism.

ZBT has worked with the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) since 2015 to bring the Words to Action program which provides tools and resources for students to strategically respond to anti-Semitism and anti-Israel bias on campus in any form including stereotypes, prejudice, hate speech and vandalism.

The expansion of the Words to Action program directly echoes the Mission of ZBT by providing brothers with strategies and tactics that will be used to strengthen ZBT’s efforts to combat anti- Semitism on campus. These efforts include the growth of partnership with the ADL, our participation with Hillel’s Ask Big Questions program and our efforts to help chapters host community forums to discuss the issue of anti-Semitism on campus.

  • ZBT’s full-time Assistant Director of Hate Prevention is responsible for working with the ADL to adapt Words to Action for Greek organizations, as well as travel to ZBT chapters to lead Words to Action and work with the brothers after the program to help facilitate follow-up initiatives.

  • Upon completion of the Words to Action training, chapters will be expected to map out their campus environment and select influential campus and Greek leaders to work with on combating anti-Semitism.

  • Our goal is for ZBT chapters to serve as a primary convener on college campuses, bringing together the campus community as part of an officially recognized campus council. On each campus, this council will focus on creating annual programming geared toward fighting anti-Semitism and all forms of hate on campus.

  • ZBT will serve as a convener on the topic of anti-Semitism prevention and will bring together students and organizations who want to be part of ending this form of hate on the college campus. Through follow-up training provided to ZBT undergraduate leaders, we will place a special emphasis on identifying other change-makers on campus, providing them training to address and combat anti-Semitism and work with them to bring the message to other students and organizations.
